Til You Hear My Heart Go Boom

One of my favorite parts about anime conventions are AMVs and Anime Hell. I keep coming up with lots of fun ideas for AMVs but for one reason or another I keep putting off getting into it. When I first moved to Portland I used to VJ at raves and dance parties so I’m not totally unfamiliar with working with video. I guess putting together an AMV still seemed kind of daunting though so I never dove into  it.. until now!

Earlier this week I was listening to one of my favorite artists, Little Boots, while skimming through Creamy Mami episodes trying to take some screen caps.. a lot of scenes fit really well with music so I got inspired to make an AMV!

There are a couple things in it that I want to work on still but overall I’m really happy with it. I spent maybe 4-5 hours on it early this week while I was feeling really inspired. I want to learn more about using video editing software (and perhaps get a better editor) before taking a stab at more complicated videos.

I hope that my AMV will introduce people to both Creamy Mami and Little Boots. I think a good AMV will keep you interested whether or not you are familiar with the show. And a great AMV will do that in addition to making you love the song they chose. I know I’m not at that level yet, but an AMV maker that can do that, and that I really admire is Ileia. Here is the first video I ever saw from her and it made really interested in watching the anime she used.. and I think even made the song more likable even though it’s totally over played :)

Her newest video, RadioAkshun, that won at Sakura-con this year (my con report is coming soon, I promise!) also used a song I wouldn’t normally like. After seeing the video though I will forever associate it with Evangelion haha. So it now has a place in my heart! Unexpectedly enough, I started learning a routine to this song at my dance class on Monday. I can’t help but think of Evangelion during the whole class now.

Next I think I’ll be posting my Sakura-con report and photos and then after some more new photos of my Creamy Mami costume!

Decoden Intro

Deco iPhone 5 Case

My most recent deco creation!

I’ve been doing decoden since about 2008. I even gave a panel about Decoden at Anime Central in 2009. I thought it was about time to do a blog post and share my knowledge of glueing sparkly things to electronics. Back when I first deco-ed an old flip phone I had, I would get crazy looks whenever I pulled it out. Below is a photo of my second deco phone (the first one was tragically lost at a DEMF after-party in 2009).

My second deco phone.

My second deco phone.

The phone above is actually the exact same phone as my first deco-ed phone that I lost, but my deco skills had greatly improved by the time I did this one. I order all of my deco pieces from Dekoden.com. It might be a little pricier than stuff you can find on Etsy, but the quality of their products are great so I prefer not to risk it by ordering from any where else. I also love Dekoden.com’s great customer service. When I lived in Japan I visited their actual retail shop and they were super nice (located near Nippori Fabric Town, aka Grandma’s Harajuku). They also go out of their way to include a goody bag of free items that match whatever you had picked out yourself. That goes for online and in-store orders!

So to get started, I highly recommend watching Xiaxue’s Guide to Life: Pimping Your Gadgets. Her video was one of the only tutorials around when I got started doing decoden so I use the exact same method she shows. Watching the video will be helpful if you’re more of a visual learner (like I am) but I will do my best to explain!

So after you have gathered your cabochons, crystals and charms and whatever you want to glue them on to, next you will need to get the right glue for the job. For the most things, a 2 part slow drying epoxy is what you want to use. Some epoxies dry clear and some dry amber, so make a note of which you get when you’re buying. You can find epoxy at any hardware store and it’s not very expensive. If you are gluing something besides crystals, clay or plastic together then you can check out this glue guide I posted to the decoden community on Livejournal. Unfortunately the original source is no longer up, otherwise I would have linked that as well.

Normally for crafting, my go-to glue is E6000, but I do not recommend it for deco. I find that it’s too thick and uncontrollable to use on such small pieces. Epoxy is not goopy at all when it’s first mixed and since it’s slow drying, you have time to spread a nice smooth layer on before it starts to get hard/sticky.

iPhone 4 Case

A case I made to give away as a prize during a lolita meet up.

Now that you have all your supplies, you are going to want to set up a work area. I recommend a large table, so you can spread out all your different pieces. I keep my decoden pieces in bags, but if you have a case they are organized in instead that will probably decrease your set up and clean up time. You will want to put down some thick white paper to set whatever you are deco-ing on. I recommend using a piece of cardboard or cardstock to mix your glue on. You will also need some tweezers you don’t mind getting gluey and lots of toothpicks. I use the toothpicks to mix my glue and spread it onto the case. You can also dip the tip of a toothpick into a bit of the glue and use it for picking up small pearls or crystals. They are also useful to just push the pieces around on the case until you like where they are positioned.

I don’t plan out my cases too much. I usually just decide where I want to put any large pieces and make a mental note so I can add them as I work my way down the case. I usually start in one of the corners and work my way down. I prefer this method since you can spread the glue on a bit at a time and it’s easy to stop and take breaks. It usually takes me 2-3 days to complete and iPhone case if I’m working on it for a couple hours a night. It really depends on how big or small of pieces you are using. I really like working with small pieces and fitting them together as I go along so sometimes it can take awhile.

I kind of stick to just one style of deco, as you can see from the examples above. But there are a lot more so you should definitely look up other examples of deco and see what you like best! I hope my intro was informative and enough to get you started doing deco. If you have any additional questions or if something I wrote wasn’t clear, don’t hesitate to ask!

Holiday Lolita Meet Up

IMG_2514

Quick pic I snapped when we stopped for a bathroom break.

This post is so long overdue! In December, my local lolita community had a big holiday meet up. I think over 20 lolitas attended the meet up. I helped organize it with my friend Melody. We held a gift exchange at a centrally located Starbucks which was really fun. I didn’t participate in it since I was a little stressed out with work and organizing, but all the gifts were really cute. It just fun to watch everyone open up the packages and see what was in inside!

After the gift exchange, the limo picked us up and we drove to PIR, Portland International Raceway, to drive through their Christmas light display. It didn’t take too long to do that so afterwards we drove the limo over to St. John’s got some pictures taken under the bridge.

Above is a picture of me posing with my friends Rachael and Ariann! Rachael is a super talented illustrator and she even drew a bunch of our outfits from a previous meet up. I didn’t post it earlier but since I wore Cinema Doll to the holiday meet too I thought it would be good to post now:

She also did really cute illustrations of  a few other lolitas at the meet up. She has prints available for sale on her website, Rainyisle.

Next year for our Christmas meet up I really want to book a ride on the Holiday Express. I didn’t find out about it until too late this year but it looks really fun!

Shampoo Cosplay

Shampoo

I’ve been so behind on blog posts lately! These photos are from a photoshoot the Portland cosplay group did at a theatre in the area. It was nice a break from trying to avoid the rain while taking photos.

I made this Shampoo costumes over the course of about two weeks (mostly working on weekends). This was my first time putting a lot of work in to the wig and it didn’t come out totally perfect. I have a little bit of fixing up that I need to do! I was really happy with how the costume turned out though. I made the top and pants out of a thick stretchy fabric and then added the bias tape for accents. The apron is made out of cotton and it crosses and ties in the back. It’s probably my most comfortable cosplay, so I really want to wear it at some future cons!

I was really excited about this costume because Ranma 1/2 is one of my favorite shows. I re-watch all seven seasons once every year or so and I’m always just watching episodes randomly when I catch someone streaming it. I would cosplay all of the girls from Ranma if I could but I decided to go with Shampoo first because I thought she would be the most recognizable without a group. Although at Newcon last month I did run into some Akane and Ryoga cosplayers so I’m hoping that we can get a group together sometime!

Happy New Year!

My cosplays from this past year!

My cosplays from this past year!

This past year was my first year in quite a few where I worked on cosplay regularly. I had no idea I did so many costumes until I put this photo above together (although two of them are casual costumes). No wonder it felt like I was so busy! Now I don’t feel so bad about the costumes I didn’t get to.

The last photo is from the weekend before New Years Eve at Newcon. I dressed up as Perfume with Holli and Ariann. We actually ended up winning a prize in the costume contest after deciding to enter the night before. Ariann put up an entry about how we made our costumes on her and Holli’s blog, so check it out if you want to know more. I might still do my own post talking more about how I designed the fabric and got it printed. I also need to do a post about my Shampoo costume.. so behind!

I’ve already started getting ready for Sakura-con. I’m planning on doing 4 costumes and they are all group/duo cosplays. I’ll be going as Tomoyo from Card Captor Sakura, Creamy Mami, Morrigan (again!), and Hibari from Mawaru Penguindrum. I’ll be doing Mawaru Penguindrum with Ariann and Holli and we’re entering it in the costume contest. Since we had to have a group name for our application, we finally came up with one we liked: Fanatic Dolly Cosplay. You can follow us on Facebook here!

This year I’ll also be attending Evo in Las Vegas. Dan is really into fighting games so he’ll be entering the tournaments for Street Fight, Marvel and Tekken. I’m going to bring my Morrigan cosplay as well as a new one, Lili from Tekken. I don’t think I blogged about it, but this past October, Dan and I took a trip to Las Vegas and it was really fun! And I’m excited to be going to a fighting game tournament since Dan and I watch almost all of Team Spooky‘s fighting game streams.

That’s all I have for now! I’ll be posting some more blog entries soon since I have a lot to catch up on!

Britney Spears Photoshoot

Photoshoot at Director Park. Photo by Ariann.

For once this year, I had my Halloween costume planned out months in advance! It’s the holiday I look forward to the most every year but for some reason I usually can’t seem to figure out what I want to be once it gets here. Some time this summer, me and a couple friends decided we were going to be all of Britney’s different personas in the Toxic music video. I chose her flight attendant outfit!

I wore it out during the day to a cosplay photo shoot where I got the picture above. It’s definitely not one of my best made garments (it’s the only thing I’ve ever glued pieces onto), but I’m really happy with it. Everything is handmade by me and it’s fully lined. I used a pattern for the hat but everything else I draped/drafted. The parts that are glued on are the silver stripes. I didn’t feel like making my own piping and sewing a ton of seams for a costume I was going to wear mostly for Halloween.

After the photoshoot at Director Park, I wore my costume out to my friends’ weekly dance night, Sunday School. The picture above is from after I won the costume contest! My friend Benny (in the Korilakkuma suit) is the one who runs Sunday School with my other friend Emma. They do an awesome job! It’s definitely one of my favorite weeklies here in Portland.

With Sara. She is dressed up as the naked glitter covered Britney from Toxic!

I really enjoyed wearing this costume out because everyone knew what it was but no one else was dressed as it. Hopefully next year I can come up with another fun idea for Halloween.

Happy Halloween!

A couple weeks ago we went to the Sauvie Island pumpkin patch for a cosplay photoshoot. It was actually pretty sunny and hot that day so it wasn’t the best day for taking photos. We did manage to find a few good spots and Tom did a great job at making the photos look like they were taken at night.

I didn’t have my costume finished yet by the time this photoshoot rolled around so I wore my bat dress from I’m Your Present with my Stocking wig. I also got these black and purple striped socks from Sock Dreams since  I know I can use them for other Stocking costumes in the future.

We had another photo shoot a couple days ago and for that one I did wear my real Halloween costume. I will post photos as soon as I get them!

Happy Halloween!

Creamy Mami Photoshoot

I finally have a photo of my finished Creamy Mami costume! I really like my new wig and the way the microphone turned out after I was done painting it. It got dark outside quicker than we thought it would during the shoot though so we didn’t get a ton of photos but I really like the ones we did get. The two I posted here are my favorite!

I definitely plan on doing more Creamy Mami outfits in the future. I’m pretty sure my next one will be her default outfit since Katie from Cotton Candy Days is planning on doing Yuu’s normal outfit and it would be awesome to get some photos together!

Lolita Traveling Dinner Soiree

A couple weeks ago we had small traveling dinner lolita meet up! I wore my brand new Angelic Pretty dress, Cinema Doll. Ivory wasn’t my first choice color but the print was really popular so the rest sold out very quickly. I’m really glad I got the ivory now though since I love it in person!

Photo by Tom Good. See the outfit details on lookbook.nu!

The first place we went to for the meet up was a bar/restaurant called Saucebox. We got some really delicious cocktails and appetizers there. I got a gingery drink that was amazing! Outside the bar was this Psychic Readings place so we stopped and took some pictures! I think it actually goes with my outfit.

The next stop was Departure, a fancy Japanese restaurant on the top floor of the Nines downtown. I had never been there before but I knew they had a separate full vegan menu so I was excited to try it. When we got there, it was way nicer than I could have ever expected. The food was really gourmet and delicious, I actually went back with Dan a few weeks later because I liked it so much. I think I have new favorite vegan spot in town.

After Departure we were supposed to go to another place for desert but we ended getting a little lost and not making it in time. We ended up stopping in a bar and then I organized some cabs so we could go to karaoke. The karaoke bar was really crowded but we got to dance and sing so it was a fun end to the night! I really hope we can have another dinner meet up soon, it was definitely one of my favorite lolita events. Thanks to Rachael for working so hard and organizing an awesome meet up!

Kumoricon 2012

A couple of weeks ago was Kumoricon, Portland’s anime convention. It’s actually held in Vancouver, WA now though. Getting over the bridge to Vancouver was kind of a hassle but the location of the con was a lot better than when it was in downtown Portland. This year Dan and I decided to get a hotel room and we arrived on Friday (Day 0). There was a lolita meet up at 5, so Ariann and I met up and got ready in my hotel room and then headed over to the meet up. We were a little late because traffic was bad but we managed to catch the tail end of the meet and get some pictures. We also managed to nab some of the other lolitas with dietary restrictions and then we got dinner at a mediterranean place (the rest of the girls were going out to an italian restaurant which usually aren’t that vegan friendly). There was also a dance at Pop Culture that night which we checked out for a bit. It was pretty fun and they played good music!

The next day Ariann and I had an early photoshoot with Tom. We wore our Karuta and Ririchiyo costumes from Inu x Boku SS. We got some really cute pictures in a coffee shop that was right across from the hotel we were staying at. After the photoshoot we just walked around and hung out at the con. I was surprised that a few people even recognized our costumes!

On Sunday, I wore my Creamy Mami costume but I didn’t get any good pictures of it. I did a photoshoot the weekend after Kumoricon though, so I will have pictures soon! Here is a preview of it for now:

Preview of my revamped Creamy Mami cosplay. Photos comings soon!

The rest of the con was spent mostly just hanging out with friends and meeting and partying with new friends! It was definitely one of my favorite cons I’ve been to. I was so exhausted by Monday that we didn’t stay very long that day. I did the fashion show with some of my friends and then got changed and checked out and headed home!
